See Clearly. Work Safely.
A workplace can look bright and still leave employees working in shadows, glare, poorly lit task areas or uneven light. BIW Safety provides a one-stop lighting and illumination assessment that can combine calibrated lux and foot-candle measurements, task-area review, shop and warehouse surveys, exit-route observations and practical recommendations. The result gives employers a clear picture of where lighting is adequate, where it may be below an applicable requirement or recommended practice, and where better lighting could improve visibility and safety.
Lux & Foot-Candle Measurements for Real Work Areas
BIW Safety measures illuminance where the work is actually performed, using a calibrated light meter and a sampling layout appropriate to the space. Readings can be documented in both lux and foot-candles and summarized by work area, task or measurement grid. The survey can address average illumination, dark spots, uneven distribution and other visible conditions that affect the worker’s ability to see the task and surrounding hazards.
-
Task-lighting measurements
Measure illuminance where employees actually perform the work and document readings in lux and foot-candles.
-
Area & uniformity surveys
Identify dark zones, uneven lighting, shadows and large differences between adjacent work areas.
-
Egress & stairwell review
Evaluate visibility along exit access, stairs and related routes and document conditions relevant to emergency movement.
-
Industrial lighting assessment
Compare selected shop, warehouse, maintenance, construction or outdoor work areas with the applicable OSHA requirement or relevant IES recommendation.
Shop, Warehouse, Maintenance & Industrial Task Lighting
Industrial lighting needs are task-specific. Repair bays, fabrication areas, inspection work, tool benches, warehouses, loading areas, stairs and exterior work zones do not all require the same visual conditions. BIW Safety can focus the survey on the areas that matter to the client, document the work being performed, and compare measured illumination with the most relevant regulatory or consensus benchmark.
Why Businesses Choose BIW Safety for Lighting Surveys
- 30 years Safety and industrial hygiene services supporting employers and workers.
- Field-based measurements Surveys built around the actual task location, work plane, shift and operating conditions.
- Advanced education Master’s-level education in occupational health and industrial hygiene.
- Specialized credentials Certified Hazardous Materials Manager and industrial hygiene practice experience.
- Lux + foot-candles Reports presented in both metric and U.S. lighting units for easier comparison and decision-making.
- Actionable reporting Area-by-area results, practical observations and prioritized recommendations for lighting improvements.
Compare Results to Applicable OSHA Requirements & IES Recommendations
Lighting criteria depend on the workplace and the task. For industrial task lighting and many general workplace applications, BIW Safety can compare measurements with current Illuminating Engineering Society recommended practices. The report identifies which benchmark is a legal requirement and which is a professional recommendation.
OSHA requirements
General-industry rules require exit routes to be adequately lighted and set illumination requirements for exit signs. Construction standard 29 CFR 1926.56 sets minimum illumination intensities for specified construction areas.
IES recommendations
Illuminating Engineering Society recommended practices address lighting quantity and quality for industrial tasks and help evaluate areas where OSHA does not provide a task-specific numeric minimum.
What Employers Need to Know About Illumination Surveys
- Illuminance should be measured at the location and plane where the employee actually performs the task, not only at ceiling level or from a distant doorway.
- Reporting both lux and foot-candles makes the results easy to compare with U.S. regulations, facility standards and modern lighting references.
- For general industry, OSHA 1910.37 requires exit routes to be adequately lighted; exit signs illuminated by an external source must meet OSHA’s specified surface illumination requirement.
- Construction work is subject to the specific minimum illumination intensities in 29 CFR 1926.56 while work is in progress.
- IES recommended practices address lighting quantity and quality for industrial tasks and can help evaluate areas where OSHA does not provide a task-specific numeric minimum.
Lighting Surveys for Shops, Warehouses, Construction & Industrial Facilities
BIW Safety can evaluate illumination in maintenance and repair shops, manufacturing and fabrication areas, warehouses, loading zones, stairwells, exit access routes, construction work areas, equipment rooms and selected outdoor work locations. The scope can be built around the areas employees actually use so the client receives a practical map of conditions rather than a generic building-wide checklist.
- Maintenance & repair shops
- Manufacturing & fabrication
- Warehousing & loading zones
- Stairwells & exit routes
- Construction
- Equipment rooms
- Outdoor work areas
